The Beast of burden is inspired by the mythical Atlas who is said to bear the weight of the world on his arms and shoulders literally. But in this case, the carving shows slavery of not only the physical but the “self”…..taking up the frustrations of being someone’s weight hauler and at the same time being rooted to the ground by personal troubles. This man is trying to free himself from life’s grounding as he bears the burden (which he’s attached to)of his oppressor who has partially alienated him(the metallic half) and made him a robot to take commands……but with all these there remains the humanity and indispensable vigor in him to liberate himself (the muscular body).
