Mutua Matheka is an artist born and bred in Machakos, Kenya, and fine-tuned by Nairobi. His art expressions include drawing and sketching, as well as molding, destroying and occasionally creating ‘stuff’. He has been drawing and sketching since his mother placed crayons in his hands at the age of three. Since then his art has evolved from drawing, illustration, graphic art and architectural visualisation to photography – his latest obsession. Matheka is a graduate architect from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture & Technology now fully applying his architectural eye to capture architecture, cityscapes & landscapes. Together with David ‘Blackman’ Muthami and the UN Habitat, his photography of urban spaces in Africa is being used to seek to change mindsets of people in African cities about their cities. He has won the pioneer BAKE Award for best Photography Blog in Kenya, as well as being nominated for the International CSS Design Award based in the United States, putting both Kenya and Africa on the map in photography. As well as this, his photos have been used by BBC Media, African Digital Art, NTV’s PM Live, among other avenues showcasing excellence. Matheka credits his creativity to The Creator who, to him, is the number one creative.
